This tofu dish has been a recurring item in our household for many years. Sometimes, they are served as cutlets and at other times, as mock fish sticks. My grandchildren especially like them with oven fries. Whenever I make them, I think of my sister-in-law, Linda, who when she first saw them, thought they were fish filet. This morning, I prepared these for my daughter and grandson. They had just come off a long trip and were hungry. My grandson, Greyson, had cereal, a smoothie and some green apple. Later, when he ate the Tofish, Greyson said, “Gigi this is so good! Mommie, it tastes like yours!” His mom replied, “Yes, I learned how to make it from Gigi.” I smiled. “She got it from her Mama!”
1 lb firm or extra firm organic tofu
¼ cup coconut oil
2 Tablespoons Braggs Amino Liquid
Pinch of Old Bay or Cajun Seasoning
Pinch of cayenne pepper
Pinch of sea salt
¼ cup Nutritional Yeast*
½ cup Yellow Corn Meal
1/8 teaspoon Paprika
Remove tofu from package.
Drain tofu and wrap in a clean paper towel, place in colander with a weight on top of the tofu. I use a cast iron pot lid for this. The purpose is to press any excess water from the tofu. Remember to place a bowl or cake pan under the colander to catch any liquid.
Unwrap the tofu and marinate In Braggs Amino Liquid for 15-30 minutes.
Cut tofu in strips as shown and sprinkle with Old Bay or Cajun Seasoning and pinch of cayenne.
In a separate plate, combine, Nutritional yeast, cornmeal and paprika.
Dredge the marinated tofu in the cornmeal mixture.
Sprinkle each tofu slice with paprika.
Heat oil in a cast iron skillet on medium.
When the oil is hot, cook tofu until golden brown on each side.
Remove from oil, place on a paper towel and sprinkle with sea salt.
Serve with oven fries, for fish and chips.
It can also be used in a sandwich or with a salad.
